Farmer’s Market this Saturday

I’m planning to be at the Kinston Farmer’s Market Saturday, August 21, with lots of pottery for sale. In this batch, there will be mugs and bowls and a few surprises. The prime time hours for the Farmers’ Market are 9-12, and I may be there later, too.  I hope to see you there.

Glaze Firing Results for 8/7/2010

We opened the kiln this morning and found some fun pieces. Everything worked out pretty well, although there were a few pieces intended for the table that got a little bubbly. Still pretty, though. The Amaco Potter’s Choice Lustrous Jade continues to impress, and the albany slip is really consistent. The first two fish for [...]

Another bisque firing

The kiln is currently cooling down after another bisque firing. This load contains a set of lanterns, a set of dinner plates, a few mugs, a personal pie plate, and eight fish. Also of note, this firing is the first with a new thermocouple offset programmed in. Hopefully this will get us closer to the [...]

Kiln Opening

The most recent results are sitting out on the work bench in the studio. Overall, I’m pretty happy with the new ware. In this firing was the beginning of a series of reference tea cups showing glaze combinations. I’m planning to expand the series and they will be retained in the studio for reference and decoration. Lots of little cups

So, I wanted a bunch of small wabi-sabi tea cups. I wanted to make a bunch for examples of glaze combinations. I did the math and figured I need nearly a hundred, and thats if i don’t worry about all combinations on all three different clay bodies. That might be a few more than I [...]

New Photos Posted

I just posted a new set of photos on Flickr. These are the last pots I threw at Double Diamond Pottery before getting things working in the Barley Hollow studio. I really liked the salt pigs and the big jar with the ring handle.

Glaze Sample Matrix

To prepare a set of small pieces to serve a glaze reference set, I will throw a series of small wabi-sabi style tea cup. Each cup will be glazed with a single glaze or combination of glazes such that the  whole series will illustrate the range of options available with what I keep in the studio. [...]

First load of glazed ware on the table

After cooking out with the folks, we headed down to the studio. The kiln was finally cool enough to open. We were met with some shiny hot pots. The results were really good. The glazes I’d worked with at Double Diamond Pottery worked as expected and produced great results. The Crystal Blue/Green from Fat Cat [...]

It’s 11:05am and still 362°F

That’s a good testimonial for 3″ fire brick, but it’s not helping my impatience. The kiln has cooled down about 40°F in the last 45 minutes. If we assume a roughly similar rate going forward and take 150°F as the temp at which the kiln can be opened, then it looks like we should be [...]
